Umpires

The volunteer umpire is as much a part of Little League as the volunteer manager, coach or concessions worker.  The umpire has the ability to provide leadership for the league and the game has given dignity and respect to the role of the umpire.

Everyone behind the scenes and at the fields associated with ASWLL is an unpaid volunteer.  One of the hardest positions to recruit volunteers for is the UMPIRE.  We are lucky to have some umpires that work games several days/nights a week, some do 2-3 games a day, and some drive from areas outside of ASWLL boundaries to work with our league.  There are a few of us umpiring without having any kids playing in the league.

As ASWLL continues to grow, the number of games will increase.  This in-turn creates a need for more umpires.  Last Spring from March 21 – May 18, we had 326 games, 36 per week for an average of 6 games per day (min of 2 umps per game). This was before the end of season tournament and All Star games.  WE NEED YOU!

I want to encourage you to consider joining our group of fellow umpires.  You will be awarded the best spot/position on the field.  The game will not start until you are ready to start.  You will also have a whole different perspective when you watch a college or MLB game after you start working as an umpire.

ASWLL is an Equal Opportunity Volunteer organization.  Males and females are all welcomed to sign up.  Age is not a factor to become an umpire (I’m proof of that).  We will train you and let you work with veteran umps to help make your experience fun.

I have talked to many fans in the stands from the field and also sitting in the stands.  Many of you already KNOW baseball.  Come out and share your knowledge.  I love talking to grand parents at the games. You guys know the game.  I invite you guys to sign up. 

You can sign up for the day or days and time(s) you want to work and the specific game or division you would like to umpire.  We normally cover minor, major, junior, senior divisions.  This season we are trying to cover Coach Pitch games also.  We will need additional umpires to cover all the games on the schedule.
